Ocean Recovery
Healthy oceans support healthy communities. Our Ocean Recovery Program helps coastal communities protect and restore the ecosystems they depend on, from coral reefs and fisheries to sea turtle habitats.
What We Do
30 hac LMMA - Kuruwitu Tengefu
Established in 2003, Kenya's first community-driven marine protected area. 15 years of management delivered extraordinary ecosystem recovery and economic benefits for 300+ households.
Coral Restoration
Since 2019, over 25,000 corals planted in 457 artificial reefs across 39 hectares of degraded area rehabilitated.
Sea Turtle Conservation
Community Turtle Group has supported protection of 4,000+ turtle juvenile hatchlings at Bureni and sister Tengefu sites.
Kuruwitu Co-Management Area
Covering 12,000 hectares of ocean under Kenya's first officially endorsed Co-Management Plan (2022). Development of first 6-step toolkit and IUCN SAGE analysis, placing communities at the centre of marine governance.
